Műfajilag: már kezdetben is stílusteremtő zenét játszottak, melyet a kritika (némi gúnynal) szinti-popnak (~ "szintetizátorocska-pop", de kis torzítással épp „műanyag-popnak” is fordítható) keresztelt, ennek alapjait valóban az „elektronikus zongorán” való klimpírozás képezte (némi dob- és gitáralappal), és nagyon jelentős szerepet játszott benne az éneksáv. Ez a meglehetősen könnyed, vidám hangzású stílus fokozatosan sötétebbre, és a rockzenéhez közelebbire fordult: ez volt az elektromos gitár és a szintetizátor örömeit egyesítő New Wave (Új Hullám) stílus időszaka.

A Depeche Mode a new wave irányzathoz sorolható
brit popegyüttes, amelyet 1980-ban alapítottak Basildonban, Angliában.
Máig
sikeres és ismert modern könnyűzenét játszó zenekar, Magyarországon is
jelentős rajongótáborral rendelkezik.
A név eredete: A név többszörös szójátékot tartalmaz. Az együttes
nevének ötletét állítólag egy francia divatmagazin
címlapja adta, amelyen e kifejezés volt olvasható. A név eredetileg két
francia szó összetétele: a depeche jelentése
"távirat", míg a mode többjelentésű szó, franciául részben módot,
részben divatot jelent.
